Aya Haidar (Lebanon)

Artist

I work a lot with memory, and I am interested in the selectivity of this. The details we choose to remember, and what we shut out

Aya Haidar’s multimedia work explores themes of loss, migration, memory, labour, domesticity, and womanhood. Her roots are from Lebanon, and much of her inspiration comes from the complexities of the Middle East and its relationship with the West. Her art is held in prestigious collections, including the Guggenheim Museum, the Jameel Collection, and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Her new tapestry work, “Stitch: A Journey”, is produced in collaboration with Karmabank and the Affordable Art Fair, and will be created over three days at the Fair in March, with the public invited to participate.

. “My investigation of the limitations of a visual language within fine art leads me to explore the fundamental elements of language that contribute to a story. This overlap plays on one’s senses of memory and imagination. I place myself at the centre of the work, both physically as the object and emotionally as the subject. My current work focuses on the recycling of found and disposable objects making poetic works that explore labour, displacement, domesticity, womanhood and memory, with a particular focus on the Middle East through the histories contained within aged, and culturally specific objects.”
