Why Hastings?

Hastings remains the 13th most deprived town in England with a quarter of children living in poverty. Four years ago, Hastings borough council spent £730,000 supporting 170 people. This year, it expects to spend £5.6m – a third of its total budget – providing emergency housing for 1,000 homeless families, a bill it has warned could force it into insolvency. Our community kitchen & foodbank is a social intervention providing support to local residents and new arrivals on an equal basis.

The community kitchen

Every Thursday lunchtime, using re-distributed food, Karmabank’s volunteers prepare and serve a nutritious three-course vegetarian meal to up to 100 local people in need of food support.

The Foodbank

Every Thursday our volunteers pack a bag of shopping for each of our guests and their families. Local residents and new arrivals leave with a full bag, brimming with fruit, vegetables, and dry goods.

The pickling project
